A smile can be deceiving but your eyes can’t hide the truth. Mellon Collie is a look inside my mind and how times of joy were truly times of sadness. I like to view smiles as masks in my art as well as sad and smiley faces in unconventional ways, having the eyes literally display their emotions.
About the Artist
Ashley Deering creates art out of the trials and tribulations of her life, including the ins and outs of bipolar disorder. She uses her nostalgia for 90’s cartoons, bright colors, and textures to bring difficult emotions to life. “There is something so satisfying with making a piece that speaks volumes with simplicity, fun, and a little optimism.” With little to no preparation, Ashley lets her experiences and humor drive her creative process resulting in childlike analogies most of us can relate to.
“My favorite part about being an artist is seeing the emotion my work evokes in the viewer. Nothing is more satisfying than hearing how seen people feel when they find themselves in my work.” A self-taught artist, Ashley has made it her mission to bring color and life to difficult topics like mental illness and the emotional repercussions of trauma, in hopes to create more empathy in society.
