Nostophobia is the fear of, or aversion to, returning to one’s home. An aversion to the past, the antithesis of nostalgia. “We long for a time before we were even born.” is the quote I included in my zine. I have seen many people in my generation (I was born in 2003) stuck in the past instead of just being inspired by the past, something done since the Renaissance. Trend cycles have collapsed in on themselves to where we are nostalgic for things from just a decade ago. Consciously or not, for those who lack the money, power, time, or creativity to craft an individual personality, it is easiest to simply adopt someone else’s. Additionally, they look to the past because the future is bleak, with climate-driven disasters rising and our society becoming less and less affordable (inherently unlivable). It is easier to mellow and criticize on the past when you don't live in it. In the present, it's own cyclical effect can be bittersweet. I use analog collage techniques in this zine to examine and fracture nostalgia’s contemporary role in personality and belief creation.About the Artist
Spencer makes handmade collages and mixed-media pieces. Through collage, he re-purposes materials people often just throw away, like magazines and even pieces of leaves, embedding sustainability into the process. Spencer also make zines (mini-magazines) using the same techniques. He likes to rediscover the media of the past, contrasting the mundane barrages of images together into a surrealist mélange to reflect and discuss modern day social causes.
