Beautiful, Long (20” to the bottom of the focal bead) simple, and totally elegant necklace. The focal bead is a very old African Amber bead that has been ringed by hand with a quarter-inch wide metal band. There are only two other beads on this piece, a Bi and a tubular bead, both of them ancient, hand-carved Chinese Jade. There are 3 strands of very tiny (27-29 beads per inch) French, cut steel beads from the Edwardian Era (approximately 1890’s to 1920).
These beads were originally used in the making of the lovely ladies beaded handbags that were popular at the time. These bags have since become quite a valuable collector’s items. I buy damaged bags and harvest the beads for my jewelry designs. Disassembling those old purses is a labor-intensive and patience-testing process but well worth the end result because they add incredible fluidity to my designs. So, not only is this necklace quite fluid, but it is also extremely lightweight.
There are 2 medium-sized ancient Chinese Jade beads, a bi, and a tubular bead, both hand-carved. I have added small beads of Garnet and African “bumpy’ beads for texture. I can see this piece worn alone or combined with a whole bunch of other amber and metal necklaces, doubled and worn shorter. So many GREAT unique looks are possible.
AMBER Amber allows the body to heal itself by absorbing and transmuting negative energy into positive energy. It helps in the art of manifestation to bring that which is desired to the state of reality. It cleanses the environment in which it rests. It also acts to purify body, mind, and spirit when worn, or carried.
JADE is known to facilitate peace within the physical, emotional, and intellectual structures as well as the materialistic world. It is said to bring accord to the environment, to transmute negativity, and to instill resourcefulness. It inspires and induces ambition toward the accomplishment of objectives. It helps to attune one to the needs of others and inspires wisdom. Much of my information regarding the properties of crystals and gems is taken from the FABULOUS, encyclopedic book. "Love Is In The Earth", A Kaleidoscope of Crystals, by Melody, which I highly recommend to anyone who is attracted to the energy of stones.
I suggest that if you live near the sea where the air is salty, that you keep this necklace in a container that will protect the metal from rusting.
