This original design necklace features 4 strands of very tiny (27-29 beads per inch) of French cut steel beads from the Edwardian Era (approximately 1890’s to 1920). These beads were originally used in the making of the lovely ladies beaded handbags that were popular at the time. These bags have since become valuable collector's items.
I buy damaged bags and harvest the beads for my jewelry designs. Just disassembling those bags is an exercise in patience, however, the fluidity that these little gems provide is worth the work. The stunning focal piece is a very old delicately Chinese scrimshaw of the Dragon and the Phoenix on the front side and small scrimshaw of the moon rising above a stream on the backside, set in sterling silver.
There are 2 very old large Tibetan bone beads with Repousse caps (Repousse is a technique where patterns are formed in relief by hammering or pressing on the reverse side of the metal). The closure on this necklace is a lovely hand made sterling silver button from the master button smith, Paco Despacio. This necklace is 13” to the bottom of the focal piece.
DRAGON is a symbol of power, strength, and good luck. Dragons are often believed to have major spiritual significance in various religions and cultures around the world. Dragons are also messengers of balance and magic, encouraging us to tap into our psychic nature and see the world through the eyes of mystery and wonder. Dragons are believed to symbolize, prosperity and nobility, as well as being symbols of supernatural power that can bestow the wearer with happiness and gifts of spiritual knowledge.
PHOENIX The Phoenix holds a prominent position in so many of the world's cultures and legends. The origin of the story of the Phoenix is normally credited to Greek mythology. However, other variations of this magnificent sacred bird are found in Egyptian Mythology where she is known as Bennu, in Jewish mythology as Mitcham, Native American mythology as the Thunderbird, Hindu mythology as Garuda, Slavic mythology as the Firebird. Many cultures believe that they are a symbol of eternal life; Phoenix teaches how to endure in trying times while giving yourself time for healing. So when this mighty bird finds its way into your life, it likely means a big renewal of your fighting strength
I suggest that if you live near the sea where the air is salty, that you keep this necklace in a container that will protect the metal from rusting.
